How2 Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI)

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the ratio between your weight and your height and is used to determine the amount of body fat you carry. BMI figures are different for men and women i.e. BMI is relative to your sex and age.

To calculate your Body Mass Index, the formula is your weight (in kilos) divided by your height (in meters) squared.
BMI = weight kgs / (height m2)

What does your BMI mean?

Less than 18.5           = underweight
Between 18.5 to 24.9 = healthy weight
Between 25 to 29.9    = overweight
Over 29.9                 = obese "seek medical advice"

Note: BMI is not the only indicator of health risk.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is just one of many factors related to developing a chronic disease (such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes). Other factors that may be important to look at when assessing your risk for chronic disease include:
  • Diet
  • Physical Activity
  • Waist Circumference
  • Blood Pressure
  • Blood Sugar Level
  • Cholesterol Level
  • Family History of disease
