How2 Prevent Tears While Chopping Onions

I have heard of a couple of senseless ideas like placing a cut onion head or a slice of lemon on your head while chopping onions – duh!  Have you heard chewing gum while working with onions – blah blah.. the list can go on, but some tricks I’ve actually tried are:

• Placing peeled onion halves in a bowl of water

• Washing onions in a running tap of cold water – just wastes water!

• Freezing the onion

• Wearing goggles

Yes, don’t laugh because I actually used my hubby’s safety glasses (the industrial types) in the kitchen as a newly married novice and it worked a little. I understand you can also buy ‘onion goggles’ specially created for the purpose in some upmarket kitchen stores for around $26 (can you believe, it’s a rip off!)

The best so far is placing your peeled onions in a freezer bag in the freezer for just 15-20 minutes – no longer that that as you don’t want to freeze it. Now you can go ahead and chop your onions without any goggles – and without any tears !

No more tears.
